FRISELLA NURSERY RECEIVES A NATIONAL AWARD OF EXCELLENCE (St. Louis, MO, September 17, 2019) – Frisella Nursery has received an Award of Excellence in the Design and Build category by the National Association of Landscape Professionals.
This Alton, IL residence was once home to Franklin Olin, founder of the Olin Corporation. One part historic preservation, three parts new design, this project was as challenging as it was rewarding. Perched high on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi river, the Olin Mansion was purchased by its current owner in 2014 and underwent many structural updates. When Frisella Nursery landscape designer and owner, Tony Frisella, visited the home it was clear the landscaping had taken a backseat to the grandness of the home itself. Tony’s challenge was to level the playing field a bit. A stone shell of a reflecting pool was to be restored and made a focal point once again. Boxwoods, hydrangeas, lilacs, and roses were chosen to highlight and accent areas of incredible historic architecture.
Seasonal interest was carefully considered so the homeowners could count on periodic transitions throughout the year. When a home is more than 150 years old, planting saplings isn’t an option. Large trees were chosen to fit the integrity of the 40-acre historic estate. One would never guess the European Hornbeams that flank the reflecting pool and several other mature trees on the property were only planted in the last decade.
Each year, the National Association Landscape Professionals Awards of Excellence recognizes exceptional landscape, lawn care, and interior plantscape design projects from around the nation.
